Engineering Manager

Dear hiring team,

I understand that the central requirement for this Engineering Manager role is building an engineering team that can make sound technical decisions, deliver predictably, grow people, and operate what it ships. I am motivated by management work that increases the team’s decision quality and ownership rather than making every decision depend on the manager.

I completed this work in a simulated transition project for Engineering Manager. I reviewed design proposals and incident follow-ups with engineers, assigned mentoring through real code reviews, and adjusted delivery scope when staffing and operational load conflicted.

Within that same simulation, I limit my claim to the work I performed. I led a retrieval quality review using candidate-generation traces, resolved conflicting performance and reliability targets and approved a staged personalization experiment.

I would welcome the opportunity to discuss the decisions and delivery I owned, and how I could apply that experience in this role.

Sincerely,

J. Lee

What a Engineering Manager application needs to prove

building an engineering team that can make sound technical decisions, deliver predictably, grow people, and operate what it ships

Work the resume should make concrete

  • reorganized 14 engineers around two durable product domains with clear ownership
  • introduced promotion expectations, growth plans, and monthly calibration for 11 reports
  • funded a reliability roadmap from the top 8 customer-impacting failure modes
  • replaced status meetings with written decisions, risk reviews, and weekly demos

Evidence a reviewer should be able to find

  • End-to-end ownership — Problem and system boundary
  • Decision and trade-off — Technical decision and trade-off
  • Cross-functional delivery — Reliability or product change
  • Outcome verification — Verification after release
