Dear hiring team,

I understand that the central requirement for this Network Engineer role is designing and operating routing, switching, connectivity, segmentation, capacity, and recovery with observable network evidence. I am interested in network engineering because dependable connectivity comes from understanding paths and failure modes before an incident.

I completed this work during a supervised Network engineering intern placement. I built an isolated TCP/IP troubleshooting topology assigned by a mentor. I tested ICMP, DNS, and TCP connectivity separately and explained why a successful ping did not establish that the application port was reachable.

Within that same supervised placement, I limit my claim to the assigned work. I checked a training switch inventory against the supplied VLAN plan, marked unassigned access ports, and corrected the port-to-VLAN map after mentor review. I linked each correction to the relevant configuration output.

I would welcome the opportunity to discuss the decisions and delivery I owned, and how I could apply that experience in this role.

Sincerely,

J. Lee

What a Network Engineer application needs to prove

designing and operating routing, switching, connectivity, segmentation, capacity, and recovery with observable network evidence

Work the resume should make concrete

  • redesigned branch routing with redundant uplinks and tracked failover health
  • analyzed flow data and applied QoS to 6 latency-sensitive applications
  • replaced 74 shared administrative credentials with role-based access and logging
  • built topology-aware alerts and first-response runbooks for 12 failure patterns

Evidence a reviewer should be able to find

  • End-to-end ownership — Topology and failure domain
  • Decision and trade-off — Routing decision and rollback
  • Cross-functional delivery — Packet evidence and automation checks
  • Outcome verification — Recovery validation and operational handoff

How the evidence changes by career stage

Internship

Responsibility shift
Computer engineering student learning network operations through supervised labs and an internship. Explains TCP/IP troubleshooting with packet evidence, checks VLAN and address plans, and records BGP, OSPF, and IPv6 experiments separately from live customer operations.
Evidence to emphasize
Built an isolated TCP/IP troubleshooting topology assigned by a mentor; tested ICMP, DNS, and TCP connectivity separately and explained why a successful ping did not establish that the application port was reachable.

Entry-level

Responsibility shift
Junior network engineer with supervised customer-connectivity work and a reproducible routing lab. Collects TCP/IP evidence, prepares reviewed VLAN changes, and checks BGP and OSPF state within the approved change process. Builds Python reports and IPv6 tests that another engineer can rerun.
Evidence to emphasize
Performed read-only checks on customer connectivity tickets, comparing TCP/IP symptoms with interface status, routing tables, and DNS answers; attached reproducible tests so the supervising engineer could choose the next diagnostic step.

Experienced

Responsibility shift
Network engineer working across customer connectivity, data-center handoffs, and carrier operations. Turns routing changes into reviewable tests: BGP and OSPF paths, VLAN and VRF boundaries, IPv6 application checks, and Python-based configuration validation. Uses incident evidence and capacity data to explain the next operational decision.
Evidence to emphasize
Developed the L2/L3 network design for hybrid customer connectivity between colocation handoffs and cloud gateways; configured BGP prefix filters and maximum-prefix limits, then checked advertised routes against the address plan before circuit acceptance.

Senior

Responsibility shift
Senior network engineer leading routing architecture, change assurance, and operational readiness. Defines BGP and EVPN-VXLAN failure boundaries, connects IPv6 and security decisions to service tests, and turns incident learning into automation and capacity planning. Keeps technical approval, execution authority, and residual risk explicit.
Evidence to emphasize
Designed BGP policy standards for hybrid enterprise and cloud interconnects, defining peer classes, accepted prefixes, communities, and maximum-prefix actions; required a route-leak test and named rollback owner before approving a new peering pattern.

Career change

Responsibility shift
IT support specialist moving into network operations. Brings disciplined incident intake, office-move coordination, and clear handovers from employee technology support. Demonstrates BGP, OSPF, IPv6, and automation in a mentor-reviewed portfolio while keeping lab capability distinct from production ownership.
Evidence to emphasize
Supported employee connectivity incidents from the service desk, collecting TCP/IP configuration, DHCP lease details, and DNS responses before escalating suspected network faults; kept endpoint, identity, and routing symptoms separate in the ticket.
